About No. 141
I never know how a painting is going to turn out, I sort of have an idea but I’m never sure. This paining was a pure experiment and I didn’t want it to have preconceived notions or personal rhetoric. It was a technical race to the finish, I started with a classical composition and then moved shapes around to define the, “what ifs,” I was deliberately not mining my psychology, I wanted it to just happen. The objective was to operate from an unbiased point of view so the picture would reveal an open ended story of its own. Who is she, where is she, is she leaving or just resting, and so on. I had painted a few like this before but, they were personal so, I knew what they meant. Here, I wanted to see if I could have the same experience that someone else would have if they had never seen the painting. I wanted to be the viewer and see if I could discover things about myself. This painting is from the beaded curtain series, see the link below for more.
